The Wankel Rotary Engine. Some love it, some fear it, and some just straight up don’t understand it. People love to bash it, but those who have dealt with it will admit there is some unholy appeal to this engine. The butter like high revs and finickiness. Yeah, the finickiness is an appeal to some. I can’t really explain it but you get more attached to the thing when you’re cursing it and trying random tricks to get the thing started. Because of this though you see it’s inner beauty, it’s undeniable personality. It’s like those dumb Pugs every chick loves. The thing can barely breathe properly but it’s because of it that makes them so damn adorable. I personally think they’re silly, and well, some people think the rotary engine is just as silly.

Ryan isn’t one of those guys. He’s a hardcore, skate riding, metal listening, long haired father who can’t let go of his passion for these spinning triangles. After rolling with his carbureted 12a in his 1983 Rx7 for awhile he decided to pull out all the stops. What you see in this machine now is a turbocharged 13b from a 1996 JC Cosmo. Rotary guy or not, when this car fires up everyone’s looking in it’s direction. I dare you to sit passenger in this car and tell me you don’t get pumped up by it. It’s raw, and rough, and badass to the core. Oh yeah, Ryan also drifts this street car. He’s had it out to TOPP Drift a few times with the old engine and once with the new one. So you can bet your money that he’ll be out to the next one. Before the last event he was patiently waiting for his car to come back from the shop so he can finish bolting on the last few things. As soon as he was done with those finishing touches he drove the beast three hours to hit the track, breaking in the motor on the way. I love the thing, and you can see how Ryan loves the car. This is the type of owner a car dreams of one day having, because cars are meant to be driven. Non-enthusiasts will never understand, but there’s more to the car than metal and rubber bits. It’s got a soul and personality, which often mimics that of the owner very closely.

So I felt it was necessary to edit this photo of Ryan and his car this way. More often than not I forget photography is one of my art forms, and that I don’t need to do anything a specific way because it’s my medium and I can tell the story how I choose. Well I thought some fake film effects would be fitting for this image. It’s rough, it’s metal, it’s traditional. All things that I feel fit this build and the owner. But at the same time, yes it was taking with a digital camera. Just like how this ‘83 FB rocks a ‘96 heart.
